I think batteries are at the limit of their development though. They haven't really moved on in 5 years. Laptop batteries still last the same amount of time they did as do phone batteries. Its why laptop manufacturers have started looking at fuel cells with replaceable methanol cartridges and companies are starting to use fuel cell powered UPS systems.

The US Military are pouring cash into these sorts of fuel cells because there current electronics last about 150minutes and they can't see batteries lasting long enough. A fuel cell of the a similar size to the battery pack in a lap top will currently do minimum 7hours and when it runs out you just replace the cartridge.

Its all very interesting stuff.
