From a business point of view I would say that the electric battery powered vehicles have a far greater chance of success due to their cost being much lower and the fact that they are 'nearly there' with getting a working mass production reasonably priced model to market. There is also mass investment coming through a variety of sources and different industries going into battery technology, which can only mean that the technology will get better not worse and the cost will become cheaper all the time.
