You're new analogy is very accurate, but it misses out a few points.
It fails to consider that science is still incapable of accurately diagnosing this ailement and that an accurate diagnosis may never arrive before your death of natural causes at the age of 102.
So the choice would be give up drinking now and you might get better but it could be something else altogether causing it in which case you're going to die anyway.
Also that by giving up drinking this may in itself cause your death or at the very least life long misery because of the yet to be recognised knock on effects of this action, withdrawal symtoms leading to mental problems or even complete lack of sex drive etc. etc.
In other words the most viable option still might be to do nothing.
