Unless you make it drastically easier for the drivers to overtake (by increasing braking distances etc) then closing the field up will only make the racing worse with less and less speed differences between the cars.

Leave the car manufacturers and crazy innovations, hybrid technology and all that jazz to WEC teams trying to win Le Mans, and concentrate F1 on being the fastest, most spectacular cars in the world. Basically, rewind 10, 20, 30 years. But then it's not just F1, the same goes for WRC/BTCC and pretty much all racing! The only thing I watch these days is Australian V8's which are fast, spectacular and produces awesome exciting racing!
