Oh... christ......

Sonny..... the gearbox changes between the SI and the SII were to MAKE IT CLOSE RATIO!

Why did they do THAT......?

It's SIMPLE: the heavier SII was DEAD on acceleration with the original gearbox ratios because it had put on SO MUCH WEIGHT and the ECU change (done for 'emissions', NOT power!) had NOT delivered enough EXTRA power to make up for the extra WEIGHT (mass!)! To GET a reasonable acceleration, they had been forced to RAISE the power and REDUCE the gear ratios... WHICH BOTH TEND TO GIVE WORSE FUEL CONSUMPTION R*E*G*A*R*D*L*E*S*S of what the ECE figures say!

You've done it again: you've read a SNIPPET on the web about the Elise and you think that makes you an EXPERT! What it makes you is a MUG and a LAUGHING STOCK!

Just GIVE UP and stick to what you know...... admittedly, that will limit you to a VERY small world!
