Racing 'handling' is different to 'road' handling.... or SHOULD be!

On the track, you are permanently running at 10/10th and all your systems are 'switched on', mentally. When the rear breaks away, you ARE expecting it..... no.... you are already ANTICIPATING it.

On the road, we SHOULD Be at 10/10ths concentration but not even (arrogant old) Ian would claim that I can concentrate at 10/10ths EVERY moment on the road. That's why I don't DRIVE$ at 10/10ths SPEED on the road. If I move up to 8/10ths of 'race speed' on the road (which I NEVER do...... cough...) then I switch off the music, stop talking to passengers, etc., etc., and move 100% of my concentration to the road.

However, most people DON'T do that on the road and the average 911 driver HASN'T GOT A CLUE about how ORDINARY cars handle at 9/10ths on the road, let alone the utterly EVIL 911!

So, Joe Bloggs accidentally arrives at a corner WELL in excess of the safe speed while he's only concentrating at 4/10ths. I mean ...

' the 911 handles brilliantly, so why do I NEED to concentrate or even LEARN how to drive near the limit.....????'.

.... The wrongly placed mass of the 911 comes into play and... lo and behold.... the 911 rapidly and PERMANENTLY moves into accident mode and... the rear of the 911 meets something hard (hopefully) or, far too often, something soft and injured!

Road handling needs to be CONSISTENT and BENIGN. It needs to HELP even the WORST driver handle their errors. Sudden changes in handling near the limit on ROAD cars are LETHAL for the average driver. Look at how the early BMW 3 series cars used to wipe-out drivers simply because the snap-oversteer.

Even the Elise had this problem. Early Elises are fitted with wide front tyres becasue it handles PROPERLY, then. However, that scared 'Joe Bloggs' and they moved to narrower and narrower front tyres to give the car understeer which (sadly) is MUCH better for Joe
Bloggs than REAL Neutral Handling! Good Elise drivers could always retro-fit wider front tyres and wheels!

However, in a race car, the utterly BENIGN car is often a SLOW car! Look at the new FIAT. It's quoted as being almost SCARY but good drivers like Alonso have turned in VERY fast times with a car that the average ROAD driver would fail to get OFF THEIR DRIVE safely!

Put simply Walter Rohl, Dereck Bell, Jason Plato and even the idiot 'Harvey' CAN use a 911 on the TRACK and can drive it safely on the road..... Joe Bloggs just CAN'T!

My argument is that the Porsche 'mystique' allows them to get away with SH*T handling and the Press call that 'character'. In any OTHER car... they'd say... 'Lethal at ANY speed'!

My proof of this claim....?

Go and look up the description of the handling of the second MR2 cars. The handling was IDENTICAL to the 911 and it was SLATED as it hadn't got the poseur's 911 badge. As was Renault's 911: the Alpines! Read reviews of the handling of these! See the reviews for the first Audi TT, See the reviews of ANY rear-engined Skoda or VW Beetle.... etc., etc..

God.... I LOATE the 911 ..... AND Journalists!

Ian
