Itpro,
Not wanting to be too smug, but it describes, almost to a tee, exactly what I was describing. i.e. open throttles, retarded ignition etc. In fact, you stated the "worst case" would be the fuel air mix being ignited when the exhaust valves were open. This is exactly what the teams are doing. Not throwing unburnt mix into the exhausts.
However, as previously stated, I accept that the teams are, to a greater or lesser extent, using fuel to drive the diffuser when "off-throttle".
Regarding "blown diffusers" in general, these are nothing new. I recall them on late-eighties and early nineties F3000 cars so they must have been on F1 cars prior to this. They were always prone to throttle snesitivity, hence why teams ended up using the periscope exhausts. McLaren (read Newey) stuck with the blown diffuser and, some clever clogs somewhere, worked out that throttle sensitivity could be negated with throttle maps and engine management.
Anyway, the Scarbs site is probably the only technical reporting worth reading when it comes to F1. Well worth keeping an eye on.
