If you're working with video files quite a lot you should have Avidemux installed. It'll convert video and audio between formats, has basic editing capabilities and can be scripted so routine tasks can be undertaken at the click of a button.

You should also have VLC Player installed for video playback. It plays 99% of video formats without the need for external codecs etc.
