In all crashes there is a distribution of energy and force. It may be difficult to understand the amount of energy and force behind a car at 50mph, but it’s a lot. When the amount of energy created to propel a car at that speed is not going in its designed easy straight line (crash) the energy is 'randomised'.
2 vehicles head on at 50mph is twice the energy and chaos - the energy produced and impact would be nearer 1 car hitting a wall at 100mph. 2 energy fields coming together.
Race crashes seem to be spectacular as the energy disperses in a 'controlled' environment, even at 200mph the driver stands a very good chance to survive (modern safety), energy, although hardly visible, still carries on thru disintergation, even the simplest component of 'chaos energy' in any accident is what will injure or kill you. Speed doesn’t kill by itself - its the energy of 'suddenly not' that gets you or energy in a component produced.
An example is the wheels on a race car, which are now tethered to the car to keep their energy closer to impact. A wheel in an accident can travel quite a distance, if you were to carry one or push one you can get the idea of the energy needed, let alone knowing what direction it will go in.
If 2 wheels hit each other at 50mph, it is very unlikely they would stop on impact (as if it was 1 travelling into a brick wall) They would disperse with the ‘energy created to propel’ them to 50mph x 2. Add your vehicle propellant, engine gearbox, chassis ect and that would be an even greater dispersal of energy and components (weight). Work on the theory of 50x2=100 + - xy and not 1x1=1.
The ‘1 o’clock hit’ expression from Nascar, has been used to explain what killed Dale Ernhart, but there are still several factor that accumulated in his death.

If you watch some crash videos on you tube, try and visualise where the energy is going and where it has come from, how much energy it takes to roll a car, where its going and where it ends up.
By no means is this meant to be scientific – its just the way I look to understand it, I hope this helps.
