There is another view....
Every generation has had 'old guys' like Brian, Alan and myself complaining that the world is going to hell in a hand-basket! So far, we;ve been proved wrong EVERY time!
Cicero wrote: "oh tempora, o mores" (oh the TIMES [we live in]. Oh the CUSTOMS [that we practice])..... complaining that he lived at an awful time and the habits of people were APPALLING... sometime around 100BC. He sounds just like us old-guys today!
This new generation is different to us..... perhaps not QUITE as 'different' as WE were from OUR parent's generation but..... they WILL survive and they WILL make it.
Secondly, you have to put the reasons we are no longer the world masters in many things.
1) We gave BACK our empire. We did it because we are NICE! Any tin-pot foreign politician only had to ask NICELY 'can we have our country back, please' and we HANDED it to them! We are the ONLY empire in history that's done that!
2) We started to pay our labourers too-much/a decent-wage (you chose which). The rest of the world who DO produces things..... don't! (Except German car workers, of course....). We are thus MUCH too expensive a place to produce the simple stuff.
3) We are still great at the highly complicated stuff (E.g., Hubble, as quoted) but...... we don't sell quite as many Hubbles as the Chinese sell tee shirts.....
Go back 70 years and you could easily have predicted what the UK would be like today from knowing the choices we made then.
I still believe the kiddies will make a good 'fist' of it! And then THEY will be writing, complaining about it all when they get to our age.....
.....plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose
