Oh dear.....

Gladiators were NOT slaves.... you have been watching too many bad films. Go read some HISTORY! A huge amount is known about gladiators from a recently excavated burial ground of gladiators.

And NO..... deaths were RARE.... they never had ENOUGH gladiators to kill them off too soon! It was a SHOW.... not an execution! The skeletons of Gladiators showed many healed injuries, that shows that they were WELL treated or else they would have died from their injuries. And..... while we are at it..... let's get it RIGHT...... 'thumbs down' indicated to let the fallen fighter LIVE..... the reverse of what's shown in films! The 'Gladiator' director KNEW this but also knew that the general public DID NOT..... and 'thumbs up for death' would have confused the THICK public!

"most of that fits but they go there knowing that people are going to be brutally killed. That is the reason for attending a fight to the death"...... TRIPE. First, all those who attend the TT KNOW that at least 1 (1.8 on average) rider will be 'killed brutally'. That puts them close to par! Secondly, deaths were RARE betwen gladiators.... the audience went to see the FIGHTS..... not the DEATHS....... If I am required to believe that YOU don't go to the TT to see deaths, then I'll claim the SAME statement for Coliseum atendees! However, I am not trying to prove the death rate was the SAME..... all I am trying to show was that it's not out of PROPORTION to the death rate at the TT!

Again, death was NOT the aim of the fights! This is a HOLLYWOOD MYTH perpetrated by the likes of the Mail and the Sun, today! All you have to do is to count the number of Amphiteatre and the likely lenght and repetition of the events. If every combat was man-on-man to the death and you had 5 fights in an 'afternoon', you'd have lost 5 gladiators EVERY EVENT. The events were far too frequent and the locations were too many for that rate of loss to be sustained! Remember, Gladiatorial combat went on for SEVEN HUNDRED YEARS in the Coliseum, alone!! It HAD to be sustaniable and that sort of death rate amongst trained and 'famous' gladiators would have left few standing after just a YEAR!

Transfer the concept to boxing; if that number died at each event, how long would it take to run out of boxers!

You might as well claim that the point of BOXING is to see brain injuries! Is it?

Ian
