Well to start with the fans are not there to see death [Yes they were, slaves trained to fight to the death... what did they expect?], or have any role in whether a gladiator lives or dies [Yes they did, the Emperor would ask the crowds choice when a loss was inevitable}. They are there to see some of the best fighting [they were there to see death and the free entry and free food attracted them in their thousands. Particularly unemployed/poor] on the planet. They have no say in the outcome of a gladiator [As above - The Emperor would ask the crowds opinion when one fighter was in a no win situation], and certainly do not wish for accidents to happen.
The reason I watch it is because I have a love of martial arts, there is a lot of history to the Coliseum [ooohhhh errrr, not kidding.... about SEVEN HUNDRED YEARS of continuous use..... that 'beats' the IoM TT into a cocked HAT - Ok, fair point as history plays a huge part in most games/sport] and it goes beyond just being a simple fight [correct it does, with very limited rules and near enough guaranteed death]. To watch what the guys achieve with simple hand-weaponry there, is nothing short of amazing. I know the risks they are taking, even more so do the gladiators competing. I do not want to see gladiators lose lives, and I am sure that is the case for all fans of the Coliseum. I want to see close combat [!!], close finishes and fight time being extended each year in one of the best arenas [most of that fits but they go there knowing that people are going to be brutally killed. That is the reason for attending a fight to the death] going. That is what the Coliseum guarnatees every year. It is unfortunate that lives are lost [in a Coliseum it is the aim of the game, not unfortaunte. they are trained to fight until the person/animal they are trying to fight is dead or they are], but if everyone went through life worrying about death then living would be particularly boring!
If you don't like it, don't watch it. I have heard people die in the Greek Theatres as well... oh the blood craving loonatics that go to see stuff.... [you should have read SOME of the Greek trajedies if you want to see bloodd-thirsty stuff - No need, the last bit was a bit of fun and i dont have particular interest in greek cinema antics]!!! :)
