In fact, religion is one of the few things that it is still possible to discriminate on the grounds of, given the right circumstances. Example:
I remember a tribunal several years ago where a Rastafarian applied for a job as a forklift truck driver. He didn't get the job and claimed religious discrimination. The deciding factor was his refusal to do anything about his dreadlocks which were deemed an unacceptable safety hazzard in relation to the tasks required of the applicant.
It's all about balance and common sense really.
So a person who wears a turban but refuses to wear some form of hard head protection may find themselves unable to work in a mine. There is a legal conflict because the employer is liable to provide a duty of care - the employee signing a waiver would be insufficient, for example.
