Isn't it suprising where in a sport such as professional football they are banned from doing anything dangerous whilst under contract, skiing, riding a motorcycle etc even though it would be done purely for pleasure and not in competition a formula 1 driver who potentially could lift the title was allowed to compete? Looking at it from Lotus Renault's position the team and the car would be set up around him as lead driver why the hell risk a season by letting him drive someone elses car that they weren't preparing? The accident afterall could have been caused by mechanical "issues".
In theory it would be like Ronaldo being allowed by Real Madrid to play rugby. Although the pay per view audience would be unbelievable to see the little winker getting taken out by some dirty front row forward lol.
