Independent filling stations are closing at a rate of 400 per year, so tight are their margins already, and becoming squeezed even tighter. Soon there will only be supermarkets selling petrol, who, like booze, can use as a loss leader, well, perhaps not with petrol, but can certainly afford to break even.
Traxtar is right, they have lost revenue as people have given up smoking......Booze is the one they SHOULD be attacking, this is now cheaper via supermarkets than at any time in last 25 years, and with cheap pub/club promotions, no wonder town centres are virtual no-go areas on Friday/Saturday nights
