I'm not sure if you saw the ncap rating section they did on top gear but it showed that a freelander was less safe in an accident than many smaller cars, infact if i remember correctly it only scored 3 and actually broke in half (or at least bent in half) so they couldnt open the doors to get any passengers out.
On 5th gear they also did a side impact test (where the 4x4 hit another car side on) and where a normal car would spin the 4x4 actually flipped and chopped the dummy's arm off. Personally I dont think they are safer either for the passengers or for anyone else. I think (again a personal opinion) that they are more dangerous.
However, in the right hands and in the right situations they are the correct vehicles for certain jobs
