As an occassional UK driver, it's interesting to see the difference. Already it seems average speeds are higher, for the first time ever (given clear roads) the traffic seems to make faster progress in the UK than in France.

But the French take a different approach, they started from a position where road deaths per head were almost double the UK and they came late to the anti speeding party.

However, depending on your standpoint, they have done the job properly. The speed limits are set and camera positioned to make it nessasary for speed to almost constantly be on a long distance drivers mind. Crossing Paris you almost need a navigator now to spot and register the constantly changing limits which are controlled with often partially hidden cameras. Of course the easy way is just to follow the local traffic, who know where the fixed and moble sites are.

The one major difference with the UK though is the covert mobile units. I drove the length of France yesterday and saw six in various amounts of 'cover'. If I drove like I and most other people drive on UK motorways, I would be expecting to be banned several times over from that one trip.

I'll leave the safety and fairness aspects aside, (although my one big critism of the French approach is that the emphasis is on catching as many people as possible, thus traps are at the end of long straight down hills etc.)but if your going to target speeding, do the job properly.
