something else of relevance may be that button believed he had the ride height too low which was hurting him of the full fuel.he managed to stay in touch throughout the race and i assume the lower ride height on the lower fuel would then turn into an advantage at the end of the race.

of course if lewis was told to slow and button wasnt then that would be of no matter.

the "battle" between the two may be more to do with the two individual drivers race engineers and how they relayed information to the drivers
