The head of the Wiltshire and Swindon roads policing unit has said that there was a reduction of more than 30 per cent in the number of people killed or seriously injured in the year to April 2008, compared with pre-speed camera levels. Which makes a mockery of Greenhalgh’s assertion, quoted in The Sun in October 2008, that “in 2007/08 70 people had been killed on the streets of Swindon and this was proof that the cameras were not working to curb motorists’ excessive speed”. A political decision based on a dodgy use of statistics rather than a road safety one.
Regarding your comparison to burglars and burglar alarms, unless its a business premises protected by abc redcare and linked to a ploice station i can tell that domestic alarms are a waste of time, nobody pays attention to them anymore, burglars will glady take the chance, i would class myself somewhat knowledgable in this area and i would put my house on it that a big dog is better than any burglar alarm, much the same as a proper walking talking traffic copper is better for policing road safety, who isnt limited to just one parameter.
Now dont get me wrong, im not a speed freak, used to be but i grown up now and realise the importance of speed restrictions but i would much rather a copper police it than a camera
