Careful.... that's where I learned clutch control..... and reverse!
Dad made me drive a car (Renault 4) over the 'edge' and catch it halfway down WITHOUT using the brakes by clutch-control ONLY...... I then had to reverse it back UP the ramp! The smell of 'burning clutch' was spectacular! Is there a BETTER way to learn clutch control? I don't think so! I tried it many times more in rear wheel drive cars and, going forward, you CANNOT stop the car as they all wheel-span any grip away all the way to the bottom!!
That wasn't the best one! We had a Citroen catch fire on the that ramp (leaking fuel pump) and the flaming petrol was flowing down the ramp to the petrol pumps.... I could see that, if the fire got to the fillers for the tanks, we were all 'gonners' anyway.... so I got INTO a burning car and drove it over to the cattle market! Now that WAS exciting! It took no 'bravery' whatsoever.... I had actually taken the SAFER option!
....
You're partially right about the remaining firms. However, Franklins took over the Renault side after my Dad died but then went T*Ts UP and sold to a Merc dealership. Hunts are still there selling Peugeots but without a Franchise. They still do much of my servicing for our cars! Whalley's did move but they all left the trade, just like our family did! Their old place has just been demolished and is due to be some sort of 'supermarket'. Other than that, Stortford has't changed that much.... my mum still lives there so I am a regular visitor!
Regards to you, sir!
