When I left school, not many school leavers went to uni, unlike today when loads do. Without commenting on whether the degrees themselves are easier these days (I don't have one so have no idea), the value of having a degree has diminished because they are so common. When I left school, I did a 5 year Technician Apprenticeship in engineering, and during this went to College to get a City & Guilds in Mechanical Engineering (probably between A level & ONC in difficulty), all of this being probably more "hands on" & geared to my employers needs than a degree would be. Employers generally prefer experience to qualifications, and this is why people with degrees still have to start somewhere near the bottom to learn & gain experience before moving up.
