My A-Levels were in Business Studies, Design and Technology and Computing, so comparing there seems no reason why your son could not take up one of the courses!
Your sons grades are better than mine were! And he does have a background in Maths, which I didnt. So he's one step ahead of where I was a few years ago already!
Because of my poor A-Level grades and lack of Mathematics above GCSE I had to take the Foundation Diploma in Engineering (years course) to get myself up to speed with the Maths and Physics required for the engineering course, once I completed the Foundation I had automatic acceptance onto the BEng degree.
Having A-Level Maths might allow your son to go straight onto the engineering course, however without the support of Physics, or the C-grade or above he might be required to undertake the Foundation year. As he already has A-Level Maths im sure he would sail through a Foundation year with flying colours!
With regards local Universities, there is Nottingham University who I know do engineering courses. Im not sure how 'Motorsport' related the courses are, but I just googled 'Nottingham University' and results came up with www.nottingham.ac.uk which I searched 'Engineering' and one of the first things that came up was a 'MEng in Engineering with a Foundation Year'. By the sounds of things this is local to you, therefore I would arrange a visit day, go and ask the lecturers any questions you want answering and and see the facilities they have to offer!
Aside from Brookes (and Nottingham) I know people on various engineering courses at Universities such as Brunel, Cranfield, Kingston, Coventry, Sussex, Swansea and Hertfordshire. How many of them do 'Motorsport' courses I am not sure, but he could source a good engineering degree at any one of these universities.
RobF1 is correct in saying dont get to 'hung up' on a 'Motorsports' course as in a sense it is a 'tarted up' mechanical engineering degree - which is by no means an easy qualification to obtain! However it is essentially the same qualification with minor adjustments, all the key fields are covered (well, speaking from my experience at Brookes anyhow).
It is important to gain a recognised qualification from a respected University. One of the reasons I chose Brookes was because the course I applied for makes me elegible with the IMechE (Institue of Mechanical Engineers) to apply for Chartered Engineer Status (CEng), one of the same reasons I continued at Brookes to undertake a MSc.
But if it is Motorsport that your son is interested in going into, then a degree tailored towards Motorsport in an environment where he has options such as Formula Student (which is massivly benificial, not only on the CV but from an experience point of view as well) available to him would be benificial to him over a stand alone Mechnaical Engineering degree. Just ensure he doesn't have a change of heart and decide he wants to build bridges! It is possible with the obtained qualifications, but more of a challenge. With a Motorsport degee he would really be refining himself (as I have) to Motorsport and Automotive industries.
As far as I am aware (trying not to be too biased) Brookes is one of the leading Universities in 'Motorsport' Engineering. If you are interested in Aerospace id suggest looking at Cranfield, Mechanical Engineering and I would suggest looking at the likes of Southampton or Brunel.
For more info id suggest 'Googling' the relevant universities and arrange a visit day. The Brookes website is www.brookes.ac.uk and the Nottingham address I posted above!
