It's important that people don't get too hung up on so called 'motorsports' courses. It's better that he gets a good mechanical engineering degree from a recognised university.

The motorsports courses (and I am generalising) tend to be engineering courses tarted up to attract students to less attractive uni's.

What is also important is to recognise that a good degree isn't even enough on it's own. He probably needs to get involved in formula student (or volunteer for something similar) to develop experience that will help his cv stand out.
