Anyone that thinks they can do without one has never been on the receiving end of a bullying exploitative employer - and the bigger he organisation you work for the more you need to be in a union - do not EVER believe the HR officer is on your side in a dispute with your bully of a manager. And when you do experience it you would wish you had a union rep in your corner -I deal with people everyday that are being treated terrbly in their employment and have no recourse as they cannot afford the legal representation so end up walking away from their jobs - often jobs they love and have thrived in until their company merges or is taken over ( common in the present economic climate ) but someone else's agenda makes going to work a nightmare - enough to make grown men cry...... i often ask why they don't have any union member ship and the answers are often - "i thought i wouldn't ever need it " or " i wish i had joined now " Trying to deal with the organisational pyschology of a big organisation often steeped in a bullying culture is impossible as an individual worker - you need union muscle........you never know when you might need it to support you. Although I know the postal strike may be inconvenient - I am supportive as the average postal woker is fairly low paid and the productivity increase they have been asked to undertake is probably unachievable and if they don't achieve increase the productivity expected they may be disciplined.......hardly the way to motivate your workforce is it ?
