Since I reviewed the TV’s a year ago I have not kept up with the latest models. What I can say though is that new technology is often very expensive and usually needs to be on the market for a while before it is fine tuned to perfection and costs are reduced.
One thing you do have to be careful with is the manufacturers trying to jump on the bandwagon with a cheap version of the LED technology. I seem to remember one of the manufacturers earlier this year got into trouble for misleading advertising regarding what they claimed as an LED backlit display.
If you are going to purchase one of these TV’s then I would advise you to research the technology first so you know how it all works and then research what TV’s are available with the technology. By doing it this way then you will avoid all the misleading TV’s on the market and probably be able to teach a few of the sales people you meet a thing or two about the technology.
Speaking of sales people that's one area that you have to be wary of, don't allow them to choose the TV for you as they will be paid commission on the TV’s and are more likely to pick the TV that has the most commission for them rather than picking you the best TV.
One very important factor when going to view the TV’s available is to not judge the picture quality until you know what the source is displaying the picture. We were gob smacked at how many stores use just a bog standard TV aerial connection and you cannot judge a high definition TV’s picture on this as most of them look terrible. What you need is a Blue Ray DVD player to play through the TV’s, once you play the Blue Ray DVD’s through the TV’s they look completely different and that is the difference between high definition and bog standard speckly aerial quality picture. Don't let the sales people fob you off by saying "well we haven't got a blue ray player linked up to that TV so we can't show you..." your the customer get them to get a blue ray player hooked up to it, if not say bye and go elsewhere. Probably best to take your own Blue Ray DVD with you as you don't know if the shop will have any and it has to be Blue Ray it cannot be a DVD because that is Standard Definition and is rubbish in comparison to the High Definition Blue Ray discs. Casino Royale is a perfect Blue Ray disc to try, as it's a high quality movie and is also fast paced so you can see if there is any motion blur.
I don't know what the new technology is like but I do know that if I saw my brothers TV on a special offer and I had the money I would buy it. My reason for this is the picture was perfect, the technology is tried and tested and I can't see how the picture could be any better even on a new technology TV. You would be right to look into LED backlits but you should consider that Sony as being the best of the LCD's on the market, so I would look into the backlit technology and compare the Sony TV to them. It can’t be any Sony TV because, as with all manufacturers, one model can be great but the next model can be rubbish so it has to be that model of Sony.
Good luck and remember to take your time, we spent 2 weeks researching and looking at the TV’s before we purchased, it was time and money well spent.
Chris.
