Concerning safety, here's my 10 cents. One of the reasons F1 CAN be so boring is it's so safe, all the drivers can drive on the ragged edge without any real fear of the consequences if they go over the limit. In a sense it has become like a video game, the cars are so safe that there is relatively little risk. Historically only the very Good and or very Brave and lucky, could win and survive.
In some ways this is mirrored in karting, one of the reasons engines have to be so heavily controlled is that minute changes in power make the difference between winning and losing, only relatively small amounts come down to the skill and courage of the driver.
Contrast this with virtually any form of motorcycle racing, where engines don't need to be so tightly controlled because so much more is down to the rider, who must still fear the consequences of an accident.
