Filey forgotten
now last time I spent a holiday in the UK it was in Tenby and when Charles and Diana got married
due to izzy we didnt want to go abroad and decided on Filey, with Scarborough, Whitby, Robin Hoods Bay and Bridlington all within 30 mins, when I was in 1st school these places were the places of dreams, sandy beaches, donkeys and massive arcades....but have slipped under the radar like an air france plane in recent years as the cheap package deals meant we went abroad
what a surprising joy,
TRAVEL TIME, when you go abroad you see the flight time, 3 hours......but then you have travel to airport, check in 2-3 hours before the flight then waiting and hoping your suitcase has gone the same route as you, getting on the transfer coach and hoping you are not last being dropped off.......if the right side of 10 hours it is a bonus
this time we left when we was ready, drove 1.5 hours, stopped for coffee, drove another hour, found the site, got keys and was in the “mobile lifestyle unit” in less than 4 hours, yep confused me as well.....pc talk for a big caravan, and had a car full of luggage and a use of a car that would pass a uk mot, some cars we have hired abroad would scare the fall guy....and need a unknown stuntman to keep them on the road.
FOOD
had some awesome food abroad but it is not as cheap as it used to be before the EURO and can be expensive compared to UK, I have eaten like a MP on expenses for tax payer money, full english every morning for less than £4 including toast and coffee, local made ice cream with choices of toppings ( paid 10p for crushed nuts : ) and unlike the mobile mafia that roam the streets in the sun......they didnt treat it like it was dipping in gold, the whole ice cream got covered, prawns so fresh if it wasnt for the pot they would try to return back to sea and tasted of prawn and the sea, the fish was same but covered in batter so crisp you would make less noise eating glass, fresh doughnuts so light only the 9 tablespoons of sugar stopped them floating off......i could go on but all supplied by local traders and killing the big guys, SUBstandard WAY, Kant Find the Chicken etc, they were there but empty.......oversized fish on a bed of chips won the day, sat on the dock of the bay with a mug of coffee
COSTS
fuel : £20
“mobile lifestyle unit” for us old skool guys, a static, on a Haven park.......£326 for 7 days for 3 adults and mini person, that is for a 16 by 35ft, on suite master, double and big lounge/diner ........statics have moved on, once in side hard to tell difference between a house......unless you lean on the walls....you soon realize why plasmas are not hung on the wall
took what I would for 7 days abroad, ate out twice a day and let money pass through my fingers like a mp with 2 homes and a moat sure in the knowledge they wont pay the bill..........and still going home with over a third
SIDE AFFECTS: well feel slightly ashamed I have got to this age and never explored my own country, the beaches were huge and clean and as pretty as anything I have seen abroad, no litter, no “modern art from a can “ and loads of small niche outlets that sell honest goods at honest prices........treat you as a visitor not a “one stop customer”
yes it is greener than going abroad, yes you are keeping money within your own country and helping support local trade.......but the key point is, you dont have to go outside your own country for a decent holiday, look what you want from your holiday and consisder if a UK based one could best be for you......of course the weather helped, but spent 5 days in Greece when it rained everyday......shell tiddlywinks was the best on offer.....and we invented that, in the UK holiday resorts expect the rain so always plenty to do and as last resort you dont end up watching soaps in a language you dont understand but know the acting is so poor you expect to see the cast of “Howards Way” starring but with fake tans :D
