There are situations where the service provider doesn't 'like' Macs.

I've had a couple of Macs that work perfectly in all respects but when you try to attach them to certain providers they baulk.

Virgin are a prime case where it will drop off for no reason and then refuse to connect again or just not connect.

The problem is at their end but they will deny it until their nose is longer than Pinocchio's.

It shouldn't stop you connecting in a network situation though.
