Winning a race does not make you the fastest, it merely means you crossed the line before the others. That actually does not mean you are the best. Supposing that by sheer luck, one driver from a lowly team, managed to win quite a few races by missing some accidents and ended up the champion, would you call him the best, I do not think so. The points system ensures that the consistent and reliable team and driver wins. That is the mark of winners.
