So you're saying that speed 'limits' should be discretionary ? If you feel that the situation warrants it, you exceed the limit, to extracate yourself from danger ? And in order to support that, millions of motorists receive court convictions and millions of pounds of revenue is generated from speeding infringements. And, if we're also led to believe that exceeding the speed limit is the cause of thousands of deaths each year, then its a pretty weak argument, no ? Unless its a revenue raiser !

It can't be all that difficult to estimate how many lives are lost as a result of breaking the speed limit versus how many lives are saved by breaking the speed limit. If the latter is greater, then abolish limits altogether and have the police focus on dangerous driving, of which inappropriate speed for the road conditions would be a form. If the former is greater, also abolish limits and fit governors to vehicles.
