Davy...
Don't shove against an open door. I am (probably) the MOST receptive person here to this suggestion. However, I have some reservations.... there HAVE been times when the ability to speed AWAY from an incident has saved me from an accident. For example, when I was a VERY young lad, I had my first Lotus 7. I pulled up (in Bishop's Stortford) at a cross roads where the road to my right was a 1 way street with the ONLY avaliable direction of traffic on that road was AWAY from me. I check the remaining directions being utterly confident that NOTHING could come quickly FROM that one way system. As soon as I moved, I got the iompression of something moving towards me from my right (impossible......) and snatched a look to find a lorry bearing down on me travelling the WRONG way out of the 1 way street.
Fortunately, I did NOT hit the barkes but floored the trottle going straight ahead! I suspect that I CONSIDERABLY exceeded the 30mph limit in my escape. It MAY have been posible to escape WITHOUT exfeeding the speed limit but I am NOT convinced by that.
I have no doubt at all that a Lorry approaching the right hand side of my (flimsy!) Lotus 7 at speed would have killed me, outright. In this case, it looks as though the ABILITY to speed, saved me.
hat has NOT been the only time where breaching the limits HAS saved me.
But.... as I said, I am THE most receptive to the argument, here!
For me, I'd probably go for a system where something like a big flashing red light goes on when you exceed the limit with a maximum of (let's guess) 10mph over and above the limit before the system locks out.
Or... I'd go for a data recorded whuch stored your speeds, etc., to be reviewed in the case of being stopped or in an accident or when you apply for your RFT.
By preference, however, I prefer SELF discipline. That comes from hidden speed cameras in HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of places and the BANNING of Road Angle and any OTHER camera detaection, avoidance systems. I'd THEN go for a review of speed limits. They could actually be set HIGHER in some places if people would only OBEY the given limits!
