The proposed speed limit reduction is estimated will save 200-250 lives per year. What about the other 3000 or so annual deaths? Don't they matter? They could be saved with a blanket 10mph speed limit. So why don't we do that? Because its not practical! All that we actually disagree on, is what is an acceptable level of fatalities on the roads each year, when balanced against the journey times and congestion. I believe the peek figure of around 9000 back in the 60's is too high, but half that - no problem. The widespread use of average speed cameras is going to become a serious pain-in-the-a**e, that is going to result in lots of decent, safe driving people being fined and losing their licence for no good reason, simply because its difficult to know what your average speed actually is. This government does not want private motorists on the roads. The motorist is being persecuted out of existance. I object on principle to having my speed measured, just in case I'm braking the law. They don't frisk every pedestrian just in case they're carrying a gun, knife or drugs. So just why the hell should motorists have to put up with all the **** all the time?
