chrisey you right on 32 lcd the letterbox effect means i am down to a screen size from the 80s......and with aspect ratio in hdmi not an option....frustrating,only way around is a hdmi to component adapter, on my plasma not such a issue due to bigger screen and aspect ratio not being locked

ch 4 probably looks good because you are viewing through hdmi cable not scart, coax etc but could be wrong, also ch 4 hd mirrors ch 4 sd, not all content is hd but saves flicking between the 2, sky one and sky one hd uses the same idea, bbc hd is just a selction box of all the bbc channels in hd

as a side note, never realised how bad some of the makeup was plastered on in day time shows, loose women-moose women, big screens leave no hiding place
