No mate, you don't get it!
I have ptrobably built around 300 PCs ub my time (for various clients) and the situation changed a few years back.
The MASSIVE buying power of )Michael) Dell (etc.) has been buying stuff SO much more cheaply than YOU can that he has beren able to seel PCs at almost 'component prices'. Often, what's offered is CHEAPER than I can buy the COMPONENTS on their own.
There IS still a margin, but it is SO small that, for those of us in the 'trade' it simply isn't WORTH it!
Secondly, a Top End PC IS where you can buy the components cheaper. BUT you'd have to be BONKERS to do it? Why: That's simple too:-
1) The Rate at which the Top End Pcs migrate down to 'bargain basement' PCs is SO rapid that, if you wait 6 months, the top end PC is about HALF the price it started. Even if it's NOT the same PC, you can get an EQUIVALENT for half price in 6 months. If you buy a MID range PC today for HALF the price, it will STILL be faster than what you already HAVE. Wait Eight montsh and THEN buy that PC you facied 8 moths ago and you will then have TWO PCs for less than the price that you WOULD have paid if you were a (bonkers) early adopter!
Yes..... I K*N*O*W that is a generalisation and that you WILL be able to find exmples where that is not accurate..... but the PRINCIPLE is SPOT ON!
Finally, most people do NOT need anything LIKE a 'Top End' PC unless they are editing music/photos/videos or playing games SERIOUSLY! Very VERY few people DO that sort of stuff at ALL! Many THINK they will when the buy the PC but find it SUCH a total FAFF that they don't EVER do it after the first WEEK! In 90% of the case, the VERY cheapest Dell will be FASTER than they can use, practically. Whether it takes 3 or 6 seconds to load Word/Email/Excel is UTTERLY ACADEMIC!
Don't go thinking that I believe Dells are particularly GOOD: they are NOT! They are pretty AVERAGE to 'so-so'.... but, by GOD, they are CHEAP at the 'bottom end'! Cheaper than you can BUY the components, for sure!
