Ford and its peers has survived every recession to date and is often held up as model on how to operate a well run business. However the US car companies' problem is not car production, its an attack from two fronts - A union-contrived pension/healthcare plan for retired employees, in other words a kick back to several generations ago when unions were a lot more powerful than they are today, and second the absence of credit.
It is ridiculous to think that the car companies can be held responsible for either of these issues... and indeed even if they were making nothing but vehicles powered by as you suggest "wave energy, wind power, solar power, electric" it wouldn't have made the slightest bit of difference to their predicament.
They will need to be allowed to fail. A bail out won't work because it won't solve the problems they're suffering. However when they do fail, the consequences for all of us will be immense. As I said from the word go, the dependency of every single one of us on the auto industry is much greater than you imagine.
