Manufacturers have always had a 'love/hate' thing in motor sport. Since tobaco ad's have been banned there was a swing over to them. Seat pulled their motorsport program a few months back. Traditionally most F1 team were not backed as heavily as they seem to be now by manufacturers - so I would expect an F1 drain, at least extra cracks to appear.
Output for new car sales in 1988 and 1989 were, if memory serves me right about 2.5 million. By 1991 if you say it was 1.1 million, manufactures are possibly in for a bumpy ride in 2009 - 2012 at least. Things will potencially get worse real quick. Maybe expect more 'customer' chassis/engines, but in the end, the rich always need their play things. Honda/Renault have see sawed a bit over the years in F1, so my moneys is on Renault being the next manufaturer to pull.
