Ian, I struggle to see how you can say that Massa's penalty made no sense? I have viewed the replay several times (itv-f1.com - the 'title tangle'). I have just watched it once again because I do very much value your opinion in most cases!
Howeve in this case with my eyes what I see is Massa either having a look at a Toyota, or going defensive on Lewis having a look at overtaking him, and simply runnig wide under his own accord into the right hander. Lewis takes the racing line up the inside of Massa who makes no attempt to use the circuit having run wide (he could quite easily have lifted for a fraction of a second and followed Lewis through using the track) then took to the grass - if you pause the footage at around 34 seconds his wheels are pointing DIRECTLY at the Mclaren. Continue the footage to 35 seconds and Lewis is pitched into a spin.
If that does not deserve a penalty, personally id have given him at least a warning, if not a black flag (thinking of incidents I have been in myself within karting where warnings and disqualifications have been given - quite rightly in my mind).
I am not seeing through 'Lewis tinted glasses', I have to admit I do have a soft spot for the englishman (starting from my earliest memories of Mansell and Hill) but im not a 'Lewis fanatic' that will defend his actions to the grave. However I am very much a F1 fanatic, something I am a little embarressed to admit at this present day with all the 'throwing toys out of the pram' that is going on.
I personally think it would be outstanding for the sport if Kubica came throgh and taught these 'winging little kids' how the title is won! I think everyone would come down to earth with a bump and if anyone does actually deserve the title his year it is Kubica. He has been the most consistant driver and kept himself out of trouble alot more than the two guys infront of him!
Would be interested to hear your thoughts, and would appreciate you watching the replay a few times - pausing at stated seconds - 33, 34 and 35. And if im missing it please tell me where on earth Lewis actually pushed Massa wide (no contact made), in my opinion Massa made a mistake trying to defend and ran wide on his own accord.
