It does go against the initial ethos of the class but it's more to do with the introduction of the tooling to check these things at the track. As I understand it, tools are being introduced to check certain dimensions and settings (i.e. timing). I assume that if the tools exist you may as well allow people to optimise their engines accordingly. So not only do you provide officials with the tools to prevent cheating, you also level the playing field. 2 birds with 1 stone.
