hi dcm,
as you surmised the smoke is a symptom of something worn and letting too much oil pass.
The top end of the Gx engine gets lubrication from the splash system, at the big end, disturbing the oil in the crankcase so that it goes up the cast channels, from crankcase to cylinder head.
If the rings are worn the engine oil gets pressurised and shows at the rocker cover.
A compression check will show if you have a drop in compression due to worn bore/rings/valves/valve seats.
Just in case you aren't familiar with doing a compression test here's my method. #make sure on/off switch is set to off #remove rocker cover # flip exhaust valve rocker off valve # remove exh v/v rotator to save losing it # screw comp tester into plug hole # open throttle # pull engine over with pull start about six times in quick succession (watch for needle climbing within gauge # read off maximum pressure attained # vent pressure from gauge
If below 120 then strip engine and deglaze # clean bore with petrol # rebuild with new rings and refill with new oil # redo comp test
done!
