As an ex hire kart engine, it won't have had a great deal of prep. Have a look at the article by BrianP about mapping the cam timing as moving the crank gear is a common part of prep for the UT1.

I'm presuming you're both using the same gearing and there's nothing else affecting the performance like a binding brake or lots of toe.
