As you say it would need good management. But a well organised buy back scheme and or pooled engines for big championships has been proved to work in other countries. Essentially it only needs somebody organising something in karting who isn't trying to use it to line their own pockets. Is that so hard to find? Perhaps it is! Aren't there enough classes which require big budgets, top engine builders etc. etc.
Of course there are some in karting who would be afraid of a class with equal equipment and walk away, it happened in the class we race. When it was launched they invited a 'top' driver to test as publicity, who then made the mistake of actually turning up for a race, he was humiliated on equal equipment by the 'amateurs' and never came back (no loss IMO).
Karting needs a class for those who want to go out at the weekend and find who is the best driver, rather than who's prepared to spend the most, isn't that what pro-karting was supposed to be? Doesn't the concept of SP engines being openly sold and publicised to the extent they are now make a mockery of this? I think so.
My lad now does middle distance running at regional level, he's good, but you won't see him at the Olympics. His comments are revealing, even though he still loves karting (double French Subaru champion). He's says he prefers running, because it's harder and when he wins he knows it's down to him and not the equipment.
Out of the mouths of babes and all that!
