I've had quite a few engines from Ebay, mainly GX120's and almost invariably they are a pile of junk. Doesn't matter for me because i'm looking for specific parts for selecting. But as an average user they would often cost more to put right than a new engine.

The most important part of competitive racing for kids, IMHO, is equal equipment, so unless you have the same engines as the rest of a grid then it's pointless for everyone concerned. But then, being harsh, if a new GX160 is beyond your budget.............

However, if you just want to play, I would suggest you go for a Loncin G200, will cost you about £110 new and be about as quick as a good race legal GX160. You can turn the revs down while your kid is learning and then later you can quite easily and cheaply give it enough power to keep them entertained and probably embarrass a few adult karts.

Only mods I would suggest are stronger valve springs (Honda G200) and a GX160 flywheel for safety.
