You're correct in thinking there is no point in spending too much time & money on an old engine. However neither is there much point in just buying a new engine and doing the race conversion yourself if you only have limited time left in the class, simply because of the amount to learn and the outlay in spares and tools etc.

Depends what level you want to race at and for how long, but can I suggest you investigate hiring a race engine.
