Confidence is just something that comes over time, unfortunately it cannot be taught.
If I were you, I wouldnt highlight it as much, maybe once at the start of the day if you catch him doing it. Tell him then, give the reasons why not too look behind, then leave it.
If he carrys on doing it maybe speak to him at the end of the day about it, or get another drivers Dad/runner to mention something in passing... Or you could try bribery as he's young..... "If you complete this race without looking behind, I'll buy you a new set of rubber at the next meeting, or ice cream on the way home for example"....
Talk to him and make it clear that all he has to worry about is focussing on whats ahead of him, and its the drivers behind responsibility to focus on whats infront of them.
