An intersting debate and I don't have enough knowledge to go with Brian or Ian's opinion. I think the secret lies with those who regulate the class - if it improves performance and reliabilty then it's a no brainer - allow it. If it improves performance and has no effect on reliability then consider the cost and decide whether to allow it. If it has little effect on performance but reduces reliability then prohibit it because the engine is awesomely powerful already and "to finish first, first you have to finish" :-) It also depends if the engines are sealed or open because that has a major effect on the cost of engine work. I had to rebuild my F6 Swissauto open engine - the parts were expensive but the engine work (carried out by a helpful, enthusiastic, veteran motorcycle racer/mechanic and also the father of a WSB rider) cost peanuts !
