Eddy, there are a lot of myths associated with the Bridgestones versus Dunlops debate. Having had a lot of experience over several years with both types of tyre I would like to make several observations based on fact rather than anecdotal evidence.
I too used to think that the Dunlop was the tyre better suited to sprint racing but not any longer. In the Honda Challenge in 2011 there were quality/ consistency issues with their slicks. Having said that I still expected the Bridgestones to be slower in 2012 but this was not the case.
At LLandow and Rowrah, the only tracks used in both years where comparable information was available, the Bridgestones were faster than the Dunlops were in 2011. I accept that weather and track conditions can change, but the tyres were consistently quick.
I disagree with your points about heat cycles and fastest laps on the last lap. In this year’s Honda Challenge I have data for 22 races. In only 5 of those races was the fastest race lap set on the last lap. Several fastest race laps were set on laps 4 and 5.
As regards the Bridgestone’s dependency /not coping with heat cycles the available information does not support this point of view. In 3 of the finals of the Challenge the fastest laps of the day were set after the tyres had done practice, 3 heats and then the final. At the Llandow and Clay Pigeon double header meetings only one set of tyres could be used over the 2 days and there was no significant drop off in performance during these events.
Our Challenge tyres were then used for testing and practice at EPEC meetings and were still very competitive.
The data that I have used refers to all the competitors and is not specific to one driver or team.
In summary the Bridgestone is an excellent choice for Warden Law as it may attract other competitors from outside the region. It also enables Warden Law drivers to race at Teesside, PF and enter EPEC rounds if they so desire.
As Castree points out, does it really matter when the tyres come on……it’s the same for everyone.
