i think 2k is being a bit optimistic....maybe for a pretty decent 2nd hand chassis, but then you need to put the engines on top of that...taking a look at recent chassis for sale on the karting site 2-2.2k is about right for a half decent rolling chassis. in terms of engines, it depends on what you want. dont be under any illusion that if you want to be up there then you will need SP motors or really good race motors....standard GX160s just wont cut it
however if on the other hand you want to just have something to start on and dont mind finishing mid/lower pack then an older chassis/standard engines are fine....just depends on what your after really!!
when i started prokarting i went for a new chassis/rpm sp motors, it was the best decision i made as the kart was quick out the box, i could have bought older kit/standard engines however i know that id end up buying newer kit at the end of the first year(if i hadnt have bought a house doh!) to be more competative.....so its a false economy really
