You might have a point, but the only logical cut off now would really be when the new engine arrives, as all the parts before are effectively interchangable, even as far back as the GX140, but from what I hear and have seen of the larger engines virtually all the parts henceforth will be different.
This is no coincidence as Honda is desperate to move a step away from the clone engines especially from the point of view of clone parts. Once upon a time if you wanted a GX coil then Honda would charge you over £100, now you can pick up a clone one for not much more than a tenner. Honda wants that market back, at least for a while. Not to mention the relative cost of a new engine, which, even with prices driven down to virtually no margin for the seller, are still twice the price of quality clones.
Trade price for the grey import engines is also a fraction of the official price. But the sellers don't last long once the Honda legal team catch up with them!!!
I would suggest that the only real solution would be some sort of modification for pre-2012 engines. It wouldn't be that hard to find a simple mod that would bring them up to the pace of the new engine, IF it proves to quicker. An advance key or GX200 head gasket might be all that's required to keep the two engines running together.
