Volumised heads all but killed MSA Honda racing. And whilst the cadets used to all be sealed there were good sealed motors and not so good. Be assured that the good ones used to change hands for serious money and added further to the decline of level racing.
Also, before there were called sps there were always sps. And before there were serious engine builders there were DIY drivers and teams buying pallets of motors and matching parts. There have always been and always be engines that will be better than others on the dyno but that does not always transfer to the track What the professional builders have done is allow everyone the chance to purchase what they perhaps are not able or capable of achieving.
And how has this affected the Honda class?? Well it is stronger today than it was 5 years ago. We have a good grid at Super 1 and it is still possible for dad and lad to compete as Jeff and his son proved at the weekend. Prorating is back on a national series sprinting to join the already successful and well supported Enduo series. And at club level at warden law, pfi and 3 sisters the class continues to be well supported and growing. Why? Stability of the regulations I would suggest. Money will always play a part in karting and there will always be big engines that mask talent. At PF and warden law there are sub classes with pro and clubman which allows the budget driver to compete relative to their spending and ability.
