A leak down tester is the best guage for overall leakage. Plus with the head off and mounted on a sealed plate you can hear which valve has air passing the seal.

Essentially it uses compressed air blown down the sparkplug hole. Where it comes out determines the area to consider work/replacement parts. Zero is the target. Anything more than 4% on a complete engine indicates some work required. This obviously brings the rings into the equation as well, however, if you can achieve zero with the head but when bolted to the block the guage shows leakage you then know it is the rings.
